Carryl Baldwin is a member of the Human Factors and Applied Cognition Program. Her primary research interests are in the area of Applied Auditory Cognition. Among these applications are auditory display design for surface and air transport vehicles (i.e., collision avoidance and navigational displays, in particular). This focus is applied to understanding the implications of sensory-cognition interactions in a wide variety of domains. Current projects include understanding the relative contribution of sensory and cognitive factors of speech processing abilities in older adults and younger adults in adverse listening environments. Additonal areas of emphasis include individual differences in spatial navigation and technologies to aid diverse populations in complex settings. Much of Dr. Baldwin's research involves using simulation technologies and neurophysiological measures to assess mental workload and explore human factors applications in these areas.
